Max's Severed Head by Threnodi Max's Severed Head by Threnodi
.
Edit: Now available in my Etsy store !

I was supposed to be making convention merchandise this evening and then this happened. 9.9;;;

Max's Severed Head hat made from fleece with applique fleece facial features and sturdy pleather 'teeth'. His ears are wired. This gave me a lot of trouble at first, but now I can wire them pretty smoothly! I use insulated wire so it won't poke the wearer, and the hats are fully lined on the inside.

This is a fan-hat, Max's Severed Head is an item from Valve's TF2 that I assume belongs to them, and Max himself, I'm not sure, but Telltale games is making the Sam and Max games currently. ; )

Hehee! I have links to the fleece I can easily get in the listing I think, so you can check out what color might be best if you do go for an Australium paint job. ; ) Glad you like the hat!

Quick question, I see the largest size is a 25 in one, since I measured my head, it of course its larger then 25 inches by what looked like half an inch, just out of curiousity, I;m just wondering if a 26 or 27 inch one would be possible, just because I'd like that hat to feel nice but not too snug, what are your thoughts on that?

I can do that, just include a note with checkout telling me your measurement. : )

did you ever find a better method for the wiring and if so is there a link you would be willing to share?

I never found a better method, though I improved my own with trial and error-- though by 'improve' I mean it takes even longer to do. ^_^; Are you running into specific troubles?

I'm making it as a gift and I didn't think of wiring at first so I was trying to use stiff fusing but that didn't work

Fusing like interfacing? Oh I see. o_O Essentially what I did was make the seam really thick, like 1/4 inch or a bit more, and I hemmed it twice in places so the wire could be run through the little tube the two hems made, and double backed a lot on the outer hem to lock it in so I could snip it to let the hat take proper shape when turned. I hemmed the two ends of this 'wire tube' so the wire wouldn't poke out, but getting the single piece of wire through it all is time consuming... if you ever find a better way maybe you can toss it to me too, huh? ; )

That looks amazing. I don't know what to recommend about wire, but I can try asking some of my sewing buddies to see if they have any ideas.

Whoa...
Incredible idea to make the hats that we all know and love from TF2! Just waiting on someone to make a Team Captain ; )

In other news, i LOVE Max heads. I have my very own Pink as Hell one ([link]). If you could make one of these in that colour, i would give you access to my entire bank account :D

Great work, good luck to you if you deiced to make more and sell them, i know i am not the only one who would offer insane moneys for one of these :D

Hehe, actually a team captain would be more like what I normally make hat wise... but I dunno where I'd get the wings. As to the Max head I could theoretically make you one that was bright pink--if you're serious (about the buying not the bank account ^_^;) and don't mind somewhat floppy ears you can drop me a note. I'd have to check what pinks are available at the store though.

Maybe you should try making more TF2 Hats irl? Could sell some of the more popular hats well? Idk, i ain't a business man :P
I might just be serious, but it comes down to the price more than anything ^^ How much would you sell one for?
If you want to discuss elsewhere, add me on Steam: zozigy, or through Skype, which is also zozigy :)

What a neat idea :D

What kind of wire so you use?
If I would make a head like this I would have used pipe cleaners because of their texture, they 'hold on' to the fabric. But I'm not sure that answers your question ^^;

Oh... that is a good idea! I'm more worried about how to attach them in the rest of the hat so the wired ears actually stand up and don't just flop forward and back-- as it is the wire runs along the sides of the hat too and that seems to give it stability, but I don't know if that would stand up to long term wear or not. ^_^; I guess I shall have to experiment!

Ah I understand what you mean! But it's a really tricky problem. Maybe sewing something like a headband inside the head might help? But I really don't know...

Yeah something like that...I've tried lightly stuffing the bases of the ears and that seems to be helping too. ^_^;
